Retrograde Appliance

Back in the 50′s this was a staple appliance in my parent’s house. Previous to microwaves it was used to reheat sandwiches and create great grilled lunches. This is perfect for grilled cheese, ham and cheese, turkey and cheese, cuban’s, french toast and all types of grilled items. We even grilled rehydrated onions for White Castle style hamburgers on it! Heats throughly and quickly on both sides and makes for crispy sandwiches without the mess of pans on the stove. Coating on grill wipes clean with a rags. Flat surface heating for total contact of food. I had forgotten how great this appliance was back in the day.

Thanksgiving

This Toastess TSG-380 Grill makes good grilled cheese sandwiches. You plug it in, wait until the green light comes on, place your sandwich on the flat bottom plate, and lower the “floating” top flat plate. Remove sandwich and unplug the grill when your sandwich is done. Simple and competent. (And my husband fixes his own lunch with this grill!)

More cons than pros compared to other presses

It’s not absolutely awful, but compared to the others I’ve had it does have some issues.

Pros:
Like the stainless steel design. Also, bottom plate has a lip so if you want to use a little butter then it won’t fall out.

Cons:
The plates are not as “smooth” as others (compared to the West Bend and the Imusa presses) but they are a rougher surface (like a Teflon or “diamond cut”) – so when you try to clean with a paper towel you get lots of little bits of paper towel left behind. Can’t wait until some cheese burns onto the plates – that should be fun.

The surfaces are quite small. You could never do two sammies at once unless you’re using tiny bread. Considering how everything is getting smaller at the grocery store, perhaps you can.

Also they don’t appear to get as hot as the others. Sandwiches take longer to brown.
Also it’s WAY more expensive than the others I’ve had.

My others have always lasted about 2 years – let’s see how long this one works.
